These maps were originally intended to help fire insurance companies determine the level of risk involved in insuring a particular building, but today they have immense research value for anyone studying the history of a building or community. The maps contain detailed information about most buildings in a community, such as the name of the person or business occupying the building, the street address, the layout of the building, and more. The History Center holds original copies of most maps for the city of Sarasota, but many are now available online through our online partners.

Topographical maps produced by the United States Geological Survey illustrate the contours of the land, as well as important features like occupied and unoccupied dwellings, schools, cemeteries, roads, trails, wateways, and landmarks--even obscure ones that have changed names over time. Use USGS TopoView to view or download topographical maps of Sarasota County and other parts of the United States. Topographical maps for most parts of the county are available back to 1956--and in some areas back to 1944.
